Strattera: the ADHD med that isn't a stimulant
Atomoxetine (Strattera, Axepta) is a non-stimulant ADHD medicine that works quietly in the background. How long it takes, doses, side effects and what people on it say.
Stimulants, non-stimulants and the stay-awake pills people take off-label. What each one does, what real users say about it, and where it's sold.

ADHD medication comes in two camps. Stimulants like Ritalin, Adderall and Vyvanse kick in within hours and work for most people. Non-stimulants like Strattera, Qelbree and guanfacine work quietly over weeks, with no buzz and no crash. Then there’s the third shelf people whisper about: modafinil and armodafinil, the stay-awake pills many try off-label.
We tell you what each one does, what the studies found, what real users said about it, and where it’s sold. The rest is your call.

| Stimulants | Non-stimulants | |
|---|---|---|
| Examples | Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, Vyvanse | Strattera, Qelbree, guanfacine, clonidine |
| How fast | within hours, the first day | a few days to a few weeks |
| How it feels | a clear “switch on” that fades later in the day | a quieter, steadier baseline, all day |
| Controlled drug? | yes: Schedule II in the US, Class B in the UK | no (modafinil is Schedule IV in the US) |
| Often chosen when | it’s the first try, for most people | stimulants caused anxiety, poor sleep or appetite loss, the heart is a worry, or stimulants are hard to get |
| Buying online | prescription only, not sold by our partners | atomoxetine and modafinil are on our pharmacy list |
Plenty of people end up taking one of each: a stimulant for the day, plus a non-stimulant to smooth the edges.
We read 191 Reddit threads about these medicines, from 2011 to 2026, and counted what keeps coming up. A taste:
Every medicine page has its own “What people say” section, with how many threads raised each point.
The best-studied non-stimulant: slow, steady, no crash.
The stay-awake pill, and what it really does for ADHD.
The longer-lasting half of modafinil.
The calming one, for anxiety and emotional overload.
The newest US non-stimulant.

The first-choice stimulant for kids, and for many adults.
The strongest ADHD meds, and how they differ.
Strattera is the best-studied non-stimulant for adults. Qelbree is the newer US option, guanfacine and clonidine calm an overactive stress system, and Wellbutrin helps when low mood rides along. Modafinil and armodafinil sit at the edge: licensed for sleep disorders, borrowed for ADHD. Compare all seven side by side, with how fast each works and its most common side effects.
Ask people with ADHD and you’ll hear two answers. Some say modafinil finally gets them out of bed and into the task list. Others say they’re wide awake and still staring at the wall. The trials split the same way: positive in children, with rash worries, and flat in the largest adult study. The evidence, the doses and the stories, and how armodafinil stretches the effect later into the day.
Much of the modafinil and armodafinil bought online comes from Indian makers such as Sun Pharma, HAB Pharmaceuticals and Emcure, and Strattera’s Indian twin, Axepta, comes from Intas. Same active ingredient as the originals, in the same familiar strengths. See every brand, who makes it and where to buy.
Usually an upset stomach, dry mouth, less appetite or patchier sleep in the first weeks; taking it after food helps a lot of people. Erection problems show up in about 8 in 100 men in trials. Full list and timeline.
In the US it’s a Schedule IV drug on prescription; in the UK it’s a prescription-only medicine licensed for narcolepsy; elsewhere the rules vary. What the rules say.
Here’s the deal. We dig through the labels, the trials and the forums so you don’t have to, and we tell you straight what each medicine does, what people report and where it’s sold. What you do with that is your choice, and your responsibility. A doctor who knows you is still the best second opinion, and we’d use one. Fair warning given. Now, here’s what you came for. How we work.

Atomoxetine (Strattera, Axepta) is a non-stimulant ADHD medicine that works quietly in the background. How long it takes, doses, side effects and what people on it say.

Modafinil (Provigil, Modalert) keeps you awake and alert for most of the day. What it is licensed for, what it does for ADHD, doses, side effects, Indian brands and what users say.

Strattera, Qelbree, guanfacine, clonidine, Wellbutrin and modafinil side by side. How each one feels, how fast it works, the usual side effects and who tends to pick it.

Modalert, Modvigil, Modaheal, Waklert, Artvigil, Armod and Axepta are Indian brands of modafinil, armodafinil and atomoxetine. Who makes each one, the strengths, how they compare with Provigil, Nuvigil and Strattera, and how to buy safely.
There’s no single best one. In the biggest comparison of ADHD medicines, amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse) had the largest effect in adults and methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) was the preferred first choice for children. If stimulants don’t suit you, atomoxetine (Strattera) has the most evidence among the non-stimulants.
For adults, atomoxetine (Strattera). Qelbree is a newer US option, and guanfacine suits people whose ADHD comes with anxiety or big emotions. See all the non-stimulants.
No. It’s licensed for narcolepsy, and in the US also for sleep apnea and shift work. Many people use it off-label for ADHD. See modafinil for ADHD.
Yes, both are modafinil. Modalert is Sun Pharma’s Indian brand. Waklert is the Indian version of Nuvigil (armodafinil). See Indian brands.
Per milligram, armodafinil: its usual dose is 150 mg against 200 mg for modafinil, and it keeps working later in the day. See armodafinil.
Our where to buy page lists pharmacies by country, including international delivery, and the Indian brands page lists them by brand name. Checking the rules where you live is up to you.
